Tourism in Brazil is a lot more than white-sand beaches. In fact, every region of the country has its green mountain getaways. These quiet villages, tucked away among waterfalls and hikes, enjoy mild weather while the cities sweat through the summer heatwaves.

Campos do Jordão

A short 2-and-a-half hour drive from the city of São Paulo, Campos do Jordão has many fun activities for families and lovers alike. Its mountain climate is cool and refreshing after a long week of work in the stuffy capital. On summer nights, the village can get as cold as 13°C (yes, that’s cold for Brazil!). The quaint storefronts offer hot chocolate and fondue, with an architecture resembling the Swiss Alps.

Kids love the garden maze at Amantikir Park, the old street cable car, and the chair lift ride above the city. For the adults, the micro-brewery Baden-Baden offers artisanal beers for all tastes. Nature-lovers can hike up to Tarundu, a camping site offering horse rides, archery, climbing walls, bungy-jumping, and more.

Monte Verde

Located in the Mantiqueira Mountains of Minas Gerais, Monte Verde doesn’t get hotter than 27°C in the summer. The more adventurous tourists enjoy expansive hikes and trails for four-wheeling and a zip line. For those who prefer to kick back, the mountain village boasts over 200 luxury inns and lodges.

Curitiba

Known as Brazil’s “greenest” city, Curitiba is the capital of the southern state of Paraná. Tourists enjoy the Oscar Niemeyer Museum, the botanical garden, and the many parks. Curitiba also offers the structure of a big city for those who enjoy nights out on the town.

Teresópolis

The coast of Rio de Janeiro recorded peak temperatures of 47°C over the New Year weekend. For those who’ve had enough of the beach, Teresópolis is only 95 km from the capital. Summers are light and humid, between 20°C and 28°C. Tourists enjoy mountain hikes, waterfalls, and parks. The town also boasts a public orchid greenhouse, boutique hotels, and local breweries. For those who want a shorter trip, Petrópolis is another cool mountain city about 52km from the city.

Bom Jardim da Serra
