Neymar, Brazil’s most sought-after football star, may move to French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) from Barcelona. Although a similar deal was discussed last year, reports indicate that he is more likely to move this time round.
PSG chairman Nasser al Khelaifi is working on a potential world-record deal for the Brazilian sporting legend. The deal could reach 222m EUR for Neymar, with a 40m EUR salary for the 25 year-old player plus bonuses. The new contract would be set to last for four years.
The proposed deal would make Neymar the world’s most expensive football player. The deal complies with UEFA’s financial fair play rules, but there are questions regarding PSG’s future finances.
The French club will have to tread carefully to minimise the economic impact on the team. Recent signings of Dani Alves and Yuri Berchiche have led some to question if PSG can afford Neymar’s proposed salary.
Neymar set on departure
The footballer himself seems certain of the deal, according to reports. He decided to remain with Barça last summer, signing a contract with them until 2021. But he seems sure of his move this time round.
French newspaper Le Parisien said this week that Neymar had already told his Barça teammates about the move. Additionally, ESPN FC reports that the player has already told PSG that he wants to move to the team.
Neymar’s father and manager is responsible for negotiating the deal and transfer. He will travel to Paris this weekend to finalize the deal in person. Reports say Neymar Sr has been negotiating with the club’s Qatari owners for the past few days.
After taxes, Neymar Jr would still earn 30m EUR per year in addition to his signing fee and bonus payments. He and his father would also potentially earn from other commercial ventures in Paris outside of football.
Neymar’s commercial sponsorships would continue to add to his earnings, and currently make him one of the world’s highest-earning young sports stars.
