Back in November, the Brazil vs Argentina game for the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers was a no-contest. Brazil won 3-0, and the Argentinians didn’t stand a chance. But when the two teams faced off against each other at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Argentinians got their revenge.

In Jorge Sampaoli’s debut as the Argentinian manager, La Albiceleste won 0-1. It was Brazil’s first defeat since Coach Tite took over, in August 2016.

Melbourne’s police had set up a special security plan for the game, after Monday’s terrorist attack. Australian-born Yacqub Khayre murdered one man and shot at police in an Islamic State-inspired terrorist attack in Melbourne on Monday.

Brazil 0-1 Argentina: The game

From the first minute, it was possible to see Sampaoli’s influence over Argentina’s national team. Instead of the disorganized bunch led by former coach Edgardo Bauza, the team pressured in the offensive side and closed the gaps.

By the end of the first half, Argentina drew first blood as Mercado scored after a rehearsed play in a set piece. Up to that point, the game had been balanced, with no team imposing itself over the adversary.

When the second half started, the Argentinians dominated the game early on. However, after 15 minutes of a cagey match, Brazil started to create goal scoring opportunities. By the 63rd minute, Brazil lost two incredible opportunities.

Gabriel Jesus receiving a through ball and passed goalkeeper Sérgio Romero. But his kick hit the post. In the rebound, Willian also hit the post.

After that moment, the Brazilians lost the momentum and weren’t able to create scoring opportunities. Also, La Albiceleste tried only to manage the game, avoiding to concede a score.
