Brazilian national team back to the top of FIFA Rankings

The last time Brazil was number 1 was in 2010

The Brazilian national football team is once again the number 1 team in the world. At least according to the latest edition of the FIFA Rankings. Brazil became the first country to qualify for the 2018 World Cup – besides Russia, the host country, of course.

Since mid-2016, the Brazilian team has played under Coach Tite, who has transformed the squad into a winning machine. Tite’s squad has nine victories in as many games, including shootouts against rivals Argentina and Uruguay.

But we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves and already proclaim Brazil as the world’s best football team. If anything, the FIFA Rankings are known for their inaccuracy in rating national teams. It takes only recent performances under consideration, creating a distorted picture of world football. For example: Switzerland (9) and Poland (11), which never had expressive results, are ahead of the Netherlands (32). The latter, however, finished 3rd in the 2014 World Cup.

Still, it reflects the momentum that the Brazilian team has enjoyed since Tite took over. But the coach himself has warned that the squad should avoid any feelings of euphoria. In recent World Cups, Brazil has failed miserably whenever it took the field as the favorite team, as in 2006, 2010, and 2014.
