At 19, striker Gabriel Jesus looks like the next big-time Brazilian player. The top scorer in the Brazilian league was one of the most coveted players during this offseason, being on the radar of Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Barcelona. The latter even charged Neymar with the task of recruiting Jesus to Catalunya, but the young star ultimately agreed to terms with Manchester City.

For the moment, though, Gabriel Jesus will stay put at Palmeiras. He is expected in Northern England after January.

The preference for the English squad is believed to be motivated by the team’s new coach, Pepe Guardiola, considered by many as the best coach of the moment. Last month, Guardiola himself called Jesus, explaining what the player’s role would be if hired by Manchester City. Apparently, the coach is more persuasive than Neymar.

Manchester City has not disclosed how much it will pay for Jesus, but people close to the deal talk about $35 million in guaranteed money – and $7 million that could be added based on productivity.

Palmeiras only agreed to negotiate the striker after guarantees that Jesus will play at Palmeiras for the remainder of the season, joining his new club in 2017.
