Rio de Janeiro’s Police Department has confirmed that the Greek Ambassador in Brazil, Kyriakos Amirids, has vanished. His wife last saw him on Monday. Amiridis was in his house when he decided to leave for and didn’t return. His wife reported him missing to authorities.

Amiridis lives in Brasília, Brazil’s capital. He was in Rio on vacation, where he owns a house in Nova Iguaçu, a deprived northern suburb of the city. Between 2001 and 2004, the ambassador served as Greece’s Consul at Rio de Janeiro.

The police have heard from a witness on Thursday evening but have not released any updates.

The Greek Embassy in Brasília has not released a statement about the case. A woman working there told Reuters that he is expected to return to work on January 9.

Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet spoken on the case.
