Brazilian-American Youtuber Joanna Franco records travel video diaries with her best friend Damon Dominique on their channel @DamonAndJo. Joanna moved to the U.S. from Rio de Janeiro when she was 5. For this year’s Carnaval, they decided to travel back to her home country to enjoy the festivities. And enjoy they did.

But on her last night, as her extended family drove her to meet Damon downtown, two motorcycles gunned them down. Jo received a shot in her lower back and had to receive treatment in the hospital. Thankfully, the bullet had hit a part of her body that would effect no vital organs. When she returned to the U.S. a week later, she recorded this video diary.

“I got shot and this is what I learned”

In a matter of days, the video got over 200,000 views. Jo recorded her diary in both English and Portuguese, and the thousands of comments reflect her bilingual background. Brazilians and Americans alike have shared their opinions on crime and tourism in Brazil. Many have their own experiences to share too. But the general consensus seems to follow Jo’s own revelation that night: nothing could stop her from returning from her beautiful home country of Brazil.
